€200K#24📖 About Qatar World Cup 2026
Overview
Qatar return to the World Cup stage having invested more heavily in football than perhaps any nation on earth, transforming their domestic league and infrastructure since hosting the 2022 tournament. The Maroons stunned Asia by winning the 2019 Asian Cup and reached a second consecutive final in 2023, proof that their Aspire Academy development model has produced genuinely competitive players. The squad is almost entirely home-based, playing together year-round in the Qatar Stars League, which gives them a rare cohesion. Under Julen Lopetegui they now aim to show that their painful 2022 showing — three defeats as hosts — was a one-off.
Road to 2026 & Group B
Qatar secured a second straight World Cup by winning AFC fourth-round Group A in October 2025 — reaching the finals on sporting merit this time, not as hosts. Drawn into Group B with Switzerland, co-hosts Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, they will be desperate to finally register their first World Cup points and goal from open play.
Squad & Tactics
Julen Lopetegui brings a possession-based, structured 4-2-3-1. Asian Player of the Year Akram Afif is the creative hub and chief goal threat, Almoez Ali leads the line, and the squad's shared club background at Al-Sadd and Al-Duhail gives them an unusually tight understanding. Technical and patient, they look to control tempo.
World Cup History
Qatar made their World Cup debut as hosts in 2022, where they became the first host nation in history to lose all three group-stage matches. Despite the on-field disappointment, the tournament was widely praised for its organisation. They have also competed as invitees at the Copa América, gaining valuable experience against South American opposition, and reached back-to-back Asian Cup finals in 2019 and 2023, winning the first.
🎯 Fun Fact
Qatar's 2019 Asian Cup triumph was one of the great continental upsets — they beat hosts and heavy favourites the UAE 4-1 in the semi-final and then stunned four-time champions Japan 3-1 in the final, all while ranked outside Asia's elite.
